In 1954, an eagle was born.
But, from a Bethlehem he did come.
Though no sign of UNUSUAL from dust till dawn,
Yet, for a greater emancipation he is here to perform.
Neither to steal nor destroy,
Only to build, fulfill and employ.
The Pharisees, Sadducees, and Scribes did wonder
Can such genius come from Africa?
A land of “ancient scavengers”, eating cucumber.
This land so wrongly painted, Oh ye believer.
At least you can see through Nelson Mandela,
And my great idol, Emeagwali Philip Chukwura.
For my idol. Where he lives does not matter.
Just let there be transport, telephone and computer.
Particularly in science, he is the great explorer,
Inventor, discoverer, and researcher.
Making those who can’t bow for the man
Bow for the works of the man.
Where his scientific awards,
Can’t all be contained in words.
He is the loosed eagle, with whitish kind of indigo
Soaring alone, in a class of his own.
Not from choice, but from destiny inevitable.
We his blood in Bethlehem Nigeria smile for him.
We don’t jealous nor envy him
But jealously and enviously guard him
For we know, except we hallow him,
The anti-Emeagwali will see to it, that,
Never again shall such from Bethlehem be allowed to
come.
So! Fly higher Emeagwali! Soar highly!
ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
I wrote this poem in honor of you Sir Philip
Chukwura Emeagwali this day 010203(January two, two
thousand and three), and I am a only a secondary
school certificate holder.
I have great dreams in me, which I do fear to see them
die unfulfilled. And as you said and I quote the only
reason why I am not in Nigeria is that our government
don’t support people who are explorers of ideas and
knowledge, which is what research, discovery and
inventing is all about”.
So, like you Oh! Thou loosed Eagle, I am not coming to
steal nor destroy, but to fulfill and employ (Only if
you can, but rely).
Yours truly,
Okadiegbo Isioma Goodluck.
